Our Efforts
Just Disaster Recovery
Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the 2010 Earthquake in Haiti, and in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, Miami Workers Center have led a movement wide effort to:
- provide relief supplies through our Emergency Operations Center;
- coordinate legal support to underserved communities;
- demand a just recovery from city, county and state officials; and,
- organize people into positions of collective political power.
The Miami Workers Center has been at the forefront of ensuring that the voices of Black and Brown communities are heard in disaster recovery efforts – to ensure that those efforts prioritize the most vulnerable and in greatest need. We are also working to build the capacity of communities to prepare for and respond to disasters on their own, building community and power in the process.
Just Covid-19 Recovery
The core of our Just Disaster Recovery operation is building capacity for residents to organize and lead their own recovery efforts. Our efforts are ongoing and we have adapted our focus to monitor and respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic reopenings and recovery efforts – mobilizing funds and delivering Mutual -Aid to our members; spearheading the Eviction Moratorium and Eviction Defense efforts; engaging in the MDC Budget discussions and ensuring the voices of our members are heard in the public discourse.
